The National Park Service aims to establish a national standard in cultural resource stewardship. The preservation planning methods contained in Cultural Landscape Reports, Cultural Landscape Inventories, and Preservation Maintenance Plans define the best practices for preserving and enhancing the nation's landscape legacy. Implementation of these plans requires close coordination between planners and maintenance staff to adress the preservation challenges facing historic landscapes, from funding and staffing to the natural dynamics of growth and decline. Until recently, there was no systematic method within the park service for translating preservation plans into the actual practices of facilities management. Differing objectives and data structures made coordination between these programs a challenge. This Landscape Line document introduces the function and application of the Facility Management Software System (FMSS). By improving the effectiveness of facility operations, it has the capability to serve as a powerful tool for landscape preservation. The tool allows facilities managers to access information about historic significance and treatment of cultural landscapes, and to use that information to identify and track preservation maintenance needs.
