Devils Postpile National Monument General Management Plan (GMP) efforts initiated the process of formalizing user capacity and related long-term monitoring needs. A visitor capacity management program is an integral framework that land management agencies can apply to better understand existing resource conditions and develop justifiable decisions if management action is deemed necessary. Visitor carrying capacity is defined as the type and level of visitor use that can be accommodated while sustaining the desired resource and visitor experience conditions in the park. This project, acknowledged as a step in addressing capacity, informs management determination of capacity-related issues by establishing potential indicators and suggesting possible standards of experiental and resource-related metrics. Suggested pilot indicators include: Experiental/Social Indicators --People at one time at attraction sites --Daily visitation on trails Natural/Biological Indicators --Informal trails in meadows and along the river --Water quality --Riverbank erosion
