Changes in an oak-chestnut forest since the chestnut blight

Species composition of a forest in the Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, was analyzed in 1977 to determine changes since an attack of chestnut blight (Endothia parasitica) after a survey in 1950 [see FA 13, 175]. Association analysis was used to determine which species have replaced the previously dominant chestnut (Castanea dentata). Quercus borealis [Q. rubra], a codominant and later successional species of the pre-blight forest, was significantly associated with chestnut stumps, and it is suggested that the species already had seedlings or coppice shoots established at the time of removal of the chestnut. Composition and species diversity in the forest has otherwise been maintained
