A summary of fire ecology activities and program information for the Park/network including fire effects plot workload, staffing, management objectives and monitoring results, and planning, fire monitoring, communications, and research. Also included are staff accomplishments/areas of focus, future program direction and other optional information (e.g. data analysis graphics or presentations, annual highlights, publications, program challenges, unique solutions to problems, collaboration, photographs of monitoring/fire activities, and suggestions on FFI). In 2014, full staffing with multiple returning employees from previous seasons allowed the Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) Fire Ecology Program to complete all scheduled work while crewmembers also participated in a wide variety of opportunities supporting incidents nationally and locally. In addition, the GRCA Fire Ecology Program gained responsibility for fire effects monitoring within the three Flagstaff Area National Monuments (Sunset Crater (SUCR), Walnut Canyon (WACA), and Wupatki (WUPA)) and began a collaborative relationship with the Southern Colorado Plateau Inventory and Monitoring Network (I&M) to monitor plots within WACA. With monitoring of 41 Fire Monitoring Handbook (FMH) plots, 45 Rapid Assessment Protocol (RAP) pilot sampling plots, 47 Composite Burn Index (CBI) burn severity plots, and 3 I&M plots at GRCA, it was a successful year while incorporating 19 unplanned plot reads from an early-season wildfire and a late-season prescribed burn.
