Soundscape Monitoring at Denali National Park and Preserve
Schirokauer D and Betchkal DH. Soundscape Monitoring at Denali National Park and Preserve
An important characteristic of the physical environment is the acoustic environment of an ecosystem. Acoustic environments are experienced by humans as the soundscape. Natural acoustic environments are composed of both biotic and abiotic sounds. Ecosystems have specific acoustic characteristics that are an important attribute of the natural system, as well as have a distinct impact on the human perception of the environment. In 2000, Director’s Order #47 directed park managers to identify baseline soundscapes and related measures. Prior to the Director’s Order, YUCH devoted significant resources to evaluating the potential affects military overflights have on Dall’s sheep and Peregrine falcon populations. While WRST and DENA experience significantly less military flight activity, soundscape disturbance due to helicopters, air taxis, and flightseeing is a topic of concern as the number of visitors continues to increase.
