Bricknell M, Commisso M, Foulds HE. 2008. Cultural Landscape Inventory for Sword Surrender Site and Setting. National Park Service, Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation. Boston, Massachusetts

The Saratoga-Washington on the Hudson Partnership includes a variety of public and private groups. The Partnership worked to protect a nineteen-acre parcel of land in the Town of Saratoga. The property is the site of the sword surrender ceremony that took place on October 17, 1777 between British and American generals. The partnership’s goal for the project is the preservation of cultural and scenic resources in the vicinity of the Saratoga NHP. The inventory is intended to provide critical baseline data that can be used in the development of long-range planning for the property. This Cultural Landscape Inventory addresses the nineteen-acre OSI parcel and its immediate setting, referred to in the remainder of this report as the Sword Surrender Site and Setting. The inventory is intended to provide critical baseline data that can be used in the development of long-range planning for the property. Specifically, the report addresses the following objectives relative to documentation of the Sword Surrender Site and Setting: 1) To provide a brief site history verifying to the greatest extent possible the location of the Sword Surrender Site, and documenting the evolution of the landscape and its characteristics over time. 2) To inventory landscape characteristics and features surviving within the study area which help to convey its historical significance. 3) To establish a baseline of information that can inform preservation efforts and measures directed to the historical site and setting.
