A summary of fire ecology activities and program information for the Park/network including fire effects plot workload, staffing, management objectives and monitoring results, and planning, fire monitoring, communications, and research. Also included are staff accomplishments/areas of focus, future program direction and other optional information (e.g. data analysis graphics or presentations, annual highlights, publications, program challenges, unique solutions to problems, collaboration, photographs of monitoring/fire activities, and suggestions on FFI). The 2011 field season started in May, when Laura Trader, Beth Gastineau (GS-7), Carmen Sipe (GS-6), Jake Wilson (GS-5), Dana Betts (GS-4), Johnathan Branson (SCA – Student Conservation Associate), Corey Henderson (SCA), and Laura Brown (SCA) re-read plots in Bandelier’s Project Area 40. In June, the crew continued to collect data in Bandelier, until the Las Conchas Fire ignited on June 26th at approximately 1:00pm, after an aspen tree fell on a power line. All crew members worked on the fire for several weeks in various capacities. In July, the crew visited PECO for two weeks. In August, Laurel Schmidt (SCA) joined the crew to help with postburn data collection in Bandelier, installing plots on USFS lands, and collecting data at ELMA. In September, October, and November, the crew continued work at Bandelier, USFS, and ELMA. All crew members helped to accomplish both NPS and USFS work. The field season for all parks ended in November. The crew read a total of 217 plots in all parks combined, including Forest Service lands. All data entry, checking, and photocopying was completed by mid December. Despite the challenges of the Las Conchas Fire, the 2011 field season was a huge success!
