A summary of fire ecology activities and program information for the Park/network including fire effects plot workload, staffing, management objectives and monitoring results, and planning, fire monitoring, communications, and research. Also included are staff accomplishments/areas of focus, future program direction and other optional information (e.g. data analysis graphics or presentations, annual highlights, publications, program challenges, unique solutions to problems, collaboration, photographs of monitoring/fire activities, and suggestions on FFI). The Everglades fire effects program had a successful year in which the monitoring of all scheduled plots was completed, along with the development of new protocols for and installation of new plots, training for personal development and continuing to support the compliance needs of the Fire Management Program at Everglades National Park and Canaveral National Seashore. The 2012 field season was completed with a fully staffed crew; however, in November, Ryan Desliu left to take a position as the Lead Fire Effects Monitor with Big Thicket National Preserve after working on that crew during his furlough. Throughout the year, fire effects staff continued to monitor plots and refine methodologies in both Everglades National Park and Canaveral National Seashore. Monitoring continued in existing FMH, fire and exotic plots and new, temporary pine forest seedling/pole plots were installed to assess the effect of ignition technique and fire behavior on pine mortality. In Everglades NP, six prescribed fires burned 18 fire effects monitoring plots in the coastal prairies, long hydroperiod prairies, short hydroperiod prairies and pine rocklands and 1 wildfire burned 1 fire effects plot in the pine rocklands. At Canaveral National Seashore 1 prescribed fire burned 9 fire effects monitoring plots in scrub oak habitat and 1 wildfire burned 2 plots in the slash pine forest; however both of these plots were destroyed when a dozer used during suppression response plowed a fire control line through them. These plots will be replaced once the units reach a 3 year post burn status.
