A summary of fire ecology activities and program information for the Park/network including fire effects plot workload, staffing, management objectives and monitoring results, and planning, fire monitoring, communications, and research. Also included are staff accomplishments/areas of focus, future program direction and other optional information (e.g. data analysis graphics or presentations, annual highlights, publications, program challenges, unique solutions to problems, collaboration, photographs of monitoring/fire activities, and suggestions on FFI). The 2008 field season was filled with new and interesting experiences for the North Pacific / Columbia Basin fire effects monitoring crew (NOCA FX). The crew read 40 plots located within North Cascades National Park (NOCA), Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area (LARO), San Juan National Historic Site (SAJH) and Olympic National Park (OLYM). Crewmembers occasionally accompanied the NOCA fuels crew, contributing to the operations sector of the park’s fire management program. The entire crew was involved in the August Rainbow Complex fire; a three-day suppression effort within the Stehekin valley. In addition, the crew assisted in two fall prescribed fires, one at NOCA, and the other at SAJH. The remainder of the 2008 season consisted of data entry, checking and analysis.
