Final Report. Returning the total concentration of phosphorus to levels compatible with traditional Everglades ecological communities has long been a goal of restoration. To that end, several Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs) have been constructed in the system, and research continues to investigate the best manner in which to operate these areas to achieve maximum sequestration. This study looks at the role of flow velocity in phosphorus uptake. In comparing two different rates of flow, it is noted that a higher velocity can yield substantial increases in biomass accumulation, and consequently, greater phosphorus removal. The results of this study highlight the importance of optimizing flow rates in the STAs to maximize efficiency.
