The purpose of the biological survey was to provide the National Park Service with a baseline inventory of the habitats, vascular plants, birds, fishes, reptiles, and amphibians that could be incorporated into planning decisions concerning potential expansion of the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site. This study included a review of existing biological information pertaining to the site, mapping of habitats, and surveys of vascular plants, breeding birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes conducted during various seasons in 2002-2004. The potential for occurrence of rare species that were not surveyed or were not found was also assessed. The study area consisted of the existing NPS-managed property and the neighboring Roxbury Farm parcel owned by the Open Space Institute (OSI).
