We quantified the influence of region and genetics on variation in native and invasive leaf chemistries and their relationship to belowground nitrogen pools. We identified genets with multiple ramets in the native Appalachian region (N=20), and two invaded regions in the Northeast (N=22) and Midwest (N=25) United States. Our findings suggest that black locust uniquely alters invaded regions by increasing soil nitrogen pools and that the degree of soil nitrogen increase varies by genotype.
