A summary of fire ecology activities and program information for the Park/network including fire effects plot workload, staffing, management objectives and monitoring results, and planning, fire monitoring, communications, and research. Also included are staff accomplishments/areas of focus, future program direction and other optional information (e.g. data analysis graphics or presentations, annual highlights, publications, program challenges, unique solutions to problems, collaboration, photographs of monitoring/fire activities, and suggestions on FFI). The fire effects team located at the Natchez Trace Parkway became fully staffed this calendar year with the welcome additions of fire effects monitor, Michael Rotter and fire ecologist, Jesse Burton. Michael Rotter, from Presidio Native Plant Nursery in San Francisco, joined the fire effects team in January. Rotter‟s skills as a trained botanist make him a great asset as an NPS fire effects monitor. Coming from Oklahoma State University‟s Department of Natural Resource Ecology & Management, Jesse Burton filled the fire ecologist position in April. Burton brings knowledge of fire effects on oak hickory forests and ecological statistics to the crew. The lead fire effects monitor, Carol Fields, joined the crew at the end of the 2009 season, and continued to expand her skills in southeastern botany. Fields‟ expertise with fire operations and fire effects monitoring in other regions has allowed the fire effects team to develop its monitoring program further this year. Fire effects monitor Jennifer Falkey has been with the crew for over three years now and has been vital in maintaining consistency in the program during the multitude of staffing changes over the last few years. The fire effects team relied heavily on Falkey during 2010 for training new crewmembers and providing expertise in the program‟s objectives and monitoring history.
