A summary of fire ecology activities and program information for the Park/network including fire effects plot workload, staffing, management objectives and monitoring results, and planning, fire monitoring, communications, and research. Also included are staff accomplishments/areas of focus, future program direction and other optional information (e.g. data analysis graphics or presentations, annual highlights, publications, program challenges, unique solutions to problems, collaboration, photographs of monitoring/fire activities, and suggestions on FFI). 2009 was another fascinating and productive year for the Southern Appalachian/Piedmont fire effects team. Work continued on short and long-term data collection at each of the six parks in our network (Table 1), as well as cooperative monitoring efforts with the US Forest Service in Tennessee and North Carolina. The crew also continued to play an important role in fire operations throughout the Southeast Region, supporting the completion of more than 24 prescribed burns at seven NPS units and providing leadership for wildfire management at the home park.
