Yellowstone Fire Ecology Annual Report: Calendar Year 2012

A summary of fire ecology activities and program information for the Park/network including fire effects plot workload, staffing, management objectives and monitoring results, and planning, fire monitoring, communications, and research. Also included are staff accomplishments/areas of focus, future program direction and other optional information (e.g. data analysis graphics or presentations, annual highlights, publications, program challenges, unique solutions to problems, collaboration, photographs of monitoring/fire activities, and suggestions on FFI). ‘Gone in a flash’ sums up 2012 for the Yellowstone fire ecology program; it seems as if just yesterday everyone was scrambling to make final preparations before the seasonal employees and new fuels specialist arrived. The 2012 field season was once again a productive year for the program. Fun was had by all, several training assignments were available, all priority plots were finished, multiple weather stations were cobbled back together (bears like to use them as jungle gyms), and everyone was able to see at least a little fire behavior within the park. The program consisted of Becky Smith (fire ecologist), newcomer Bill Mayer (fuels specialist), Jess Page (lead fire effects), Tim Pankey (fire effects crewmember) who returned for a third season, and newcomer Kendra Graff (fire effects crewmember). As usual, job duties encompassed several aspects of fire ecology and management; the following is an overview of the program’s 2012 endeavors in more detail.
