Final Report. Researchers examined the response of fish, macroinvertebrates, and periphyton along the eastern border of Everglades National Park (ENP) to the implementation of the Interim Operations Plan (IOP). Overall, IOP resulted in a more natural timing and distribution of water flow. Moreover, water quality remained the same or was improved near the structures discharging water into this region. An increase in soil phosphorous was detected downstream, however, which resulted in a change in the species composition of invertebrate communities. Eastern ENP also experienced a shift in the vegetative community that was more like that of the drier years of 1979 and 1992. No improvements were observed in the salinity conditions of Florida Bay, although the reduction in water levels did allow for improved nesting success of the roseate spoonbill in the mangroves.
