2014 bird surveys at Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park

Coastal waterbird (loons, grebes, cormorants, herons, ducks and geese, plovers and sandpipers, gulls, alcids, and kingfishers) surveys were conducted at Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park in 2014. The surveys serve to document avian abundance and habitat use throughout the Park. Ten surveys were conducted from May 23 to September 2 and thirty species were detected. The North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) and Alaska Landbird Monitoring Survey (ALMS) were conducted as part of a continuous monitoring program to document the diversity and abundance of avian species breeding in the area. Conducted in late June, the BBS detected 42 species and the ALMS detected 30 species. Eagle nest monitoring continued with four historically active nests relocated and a newly constructed nest documented. Three of the nests had breeding activity in May and early June, but all nests appeared to fail for unknown reasons. Opportunistic bird sightings were also recorded.
