Effects of Python-Associated Mammal Declines on Nesting Success of Turtles. Research Permit and Reporting System
Burmese pythons have caused severe declines in several species of mammals but the overall impacts they will have on ecosystems remain unknown. We evaluated indirect effects of pythons on nesting success of freshwater turtles. Depredation rates at core sites were low (high python impact), higher at peripheral sites and very high at extralimital sites (pythons absent). Our results suggest that python-associated mammal declines in South Florida are having a positive effect on turtle nesting.
