Initial results indicate no effect of the carbon addition, indicating that the application rate may need to be greater to be effective at reducing B. rubens biomass and abundance. Soil moisture was relatively consistent throughout plots, except at the time of peak live biomass (April) where we saw increased soil moisture under the 70% shade reduction canopy (where brome biomass was most abundant). Although the relationship was not strongly predictive, B. rubens cover and biomass were negatively related to soil moisture in April, the month preceeding cover and biomass collection. This year we also observed that brome under shaded treatments had an extended phenology, where plant development was slowed and the growing season for highly shaded plots extended.
