Data indicate that while the initial application rates of carbon were sufficient to reduce available soil N, effects on brome biomass did not become evident until the application rate was increased. After two years of application, biomass of invasive brome was decreased with the addition of moderate levels of carbon. Shading treatments had a stronger effect on plant community composition that did carbon treatments, with a greater relative abundance of brome evident in treatments with the greatest light reduction. Overall, emergence rates of most of the native annual species was low and patchy among treatments. Emergence was too low to support statistical power for A. tessellata, D. pinnata, L. tenella, and S. columbariae. Statistical analyses are ongoing for the relative competitive ability of A. nuttallianus and L. lasiocarpum with Bromus rubens.
