This annual report details the status of key indicators of water quality obtained from monitoring in Nez Perce National Historical Park (NEPE). Monitoring occurred in two units of NEPE, Spalding and Weippie Prairie. Lapwai Creek flows through the Spalding unit and Jim Ford Creek flows through the Weippe Prairie unit. Lapwai and Jim Ford Creeks were previously sampled by the UCBN in 2011 (see Starkey 2012). Benthic macroinvertebrates were collected by the United States Forest Service- PACFISH/INFISH Biological Opinion (PIBO) according to their peer reviewed protocol during the UCBN’s monitoring of stream channel characteristics and riparian condition in 2014. Water chemistry and macroinvertebrate results indicate that Jim Ford and Lapwai Creeks are in fair condition, with the primary concerns being elevated water temperatures, low dissolved oxygen, and pH levels occasionally above established thresholds. UCBN water quality monitoring is conducted on a 3 year rotating panel. As a result, conditions in both Jim Ford and Lapwai Creek will be re-evaluated in 2017.
