This annual report details the status of key indicators of water quality obtained from monitoring in Whitman Mission National Historic Site (WHMI). In 2013 and 2014, monitoring occurred in Doan and Mill Creeks. The primary focus of monitoring in Doan Creek was water temperature, while monitoring in Mill Creek evaluated dissolved oxygen, pH, specific conductance, temperature and turbidity. Both streams were previously sampled by the UCBN in 2008 and 2011 (Starkey 2009 and Starkey 2012). In both streams, benthic macroinvertebrates were collected by the United States Forest Service- PACFISH/INFISH Biological Opinion (PIBO) according to their peer reviewed protocol during the UCBN’s monitoring of stream channel characteristics and riparian condition in 2014. Water chemistry and macroinvertebrate results indicate that Doan and Mill Creeks are in fair condition, with the primary concerns being elevated water temperatures, low dissolved oxygen, and pH levels occasionally above established thresholds. UCBN water quality monitoring is conducted on a 3 year rotating panel. As a result, conditions in both streams will be re-evaluated in 2017.
