Because of the severe decline in both the number and the range of the brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this study was proposed to obtain information about their taxonomic status. Samples from thirty-two populations of brook trout from nine states and the Park were collected. These we subjected to starch gel electrophoresis in an effort to assay their genetic makeup. Eight enzymes from this study and six from a parallel study were examined and found to code for an estimated 29 genetic loci. Nei's coefficient, a statistical test which compares each population to every other one fro differentiation. Reduced genetic variation was observed in brook trout collected from the Park. It is concluded that no significant genetic variation exists between brook trout from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and other brook trout populations.
