A hydrothermal area is a contiguous geologic unit including one or more thermal features. The boundary marks the maximum spatial extent of hydrothermally altered soils, thermal deposits, geothermal gas emissions, or heated ground. The historic Old Faithful pub is located within an active hydrothermal area. A significant portion of the area contains hydrothermally altered soils and hydrothermal deposits. At one location, hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide were measured in significant concentrations ( >100 parts per million (ppm) hydrogen sulfide and 24.9% carbon dioxide). Boiling temperatures were found at two locations at 30 and 38 inches (76 and 96 cm) depth. Significantly elevated ground temperatures indicate an active hydrothermal area throughout the entire construction site.
