The National Park Service (NPS) is unique among federal land managing agencies in that it is mandated to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wildlife therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such a manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations (NPS Organic Act, 1916). Throughout the history of NPS, managers have encouraged recreational angling in naturally functioning aquatic ecosystems characterized by wild native and non-native species and natural habitats. In the southeast, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is recognized for the quality of recreational angling and the diversity of its fish fauna. This Fishery Management Plan provides guidance for future management actions and ensures the preservation of naturally functioning aquatic ecosystems. The plan should be reviewed and adapted on a three-to-five-year basis, but changes in funding or priorities during this time period may also dictate the need for revision at other times.
