Status of Western Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus occidentalis) in Big Bend National Park 2015

This report is a preliminary survey of the presence and status of yellow-billed cuckoo in Big Bend National Park. The survey was conducted by Mark and Kym Flippo between June 18 and July 10, 2015. A total of twelve surveys in five different locations were conducted to provide an initial survey of the presence and status of yellow-billed cuckoo in Big Bend National Park. Adult cuckoos were documented in four of the five locations, dependent and independent juvenile birds were observed at one location only on the park’s east side, and two active nests were located in two different sites on the park’s west side. Initial results indicate that yellow-billed cuckoos on the park’s east side utilize different habitat and appear to be on a different schedule with regard to nesting (earlier) than those on the west side.
