Brook trout range in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GRSM) has declined approximately 75% since the turn of the century. In 1976 the Park initiated a program to evaluate the effectiveness of electrofishing for the eradication of non-native rainbow trout upstream of waterfalls or cascades. This method proved successful and to date segments of six streams have been successfully restored. However, the majority of streams in which this method can be used have been completed and alternative methods must be evaluated if larger stream segments are to be restored for brook trout. In 2000, GRSM received funding to evaluate the use of the piscicide antimycin in Sams Creek for brook trout restoration in a larger stream.
