This document contains a brief progress report for landbird monitoring conducted in 2013-2014 in riparian habitats in Point Reyes National Seashore and Golden Gate National Recreation Area as part of the National Park Service’s Inventory and Monitoring Project, and following protocols established for this purpose (Gardali et al. 2010). The Analysis and Synthesis reports that are produced every six years (e.g., Humple and Porzig 2012) include in-depth analyses and discussion that are not the purview of this progress report. Monitoring was conducted by Point Blue Conservation Science (hereafter Point Blue; formerly PRBO Conservation Science) at 15 locations within the parks using one or both of two methods, point counts and mist netting. Point count surveys were conducted during the breeding season of 2014, while mist netting was conducted from 15 August 2013 to 16 August 2014. Monitoring at this entire suite of sites takes place every three years, with monitoring at a subset of sites (including the intensive mist netting) also occurring annually (Gardali et al. 2010). Of the 119 bird species detected, 33 were California Partners in Flight Focal Species (CalPIF 2000, CalPIF 2002a, CalPIF 2002b, CalPIF 2004, CalPIF 2009, RHJV 2004), and 6 were also California Bird Species of Special Concern (Shuford and Gardali 2008). Site narratives were updated to reflect changes in vegetation and other environmental factors. Public outreach is an important component of Point Blue’s mist netting programs; a total of 500 members of the public viewed mist netting at these sites between 15 August 2013 and 16 August 2014 through organized class visits, and many more as drop-in visitors.
