Floristic Survey of Corticolous Subaerial Algae in North Carolina

Over a 10-month period, 19 genera of corticolous subaerial algae in the three divisions Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, and Bacillariophyta were cultured and identified in collections from 26 species of trees commonly found in North Carolina. Ecological comparisons of the flora showed no correlation between a particular genus and any specific season or height above the ground surface on specific trees. Generalizations that could be made were: (1) Gymnosperms seemed to support a flora composed almost entirely of Chlorophyta, and (2) coricolous Cyanophyta were most common in the Piedmont area while the Chlorophyta were ubiquitous.
