The scope of work prescribed for this HSR specifies that documentary research be limited to the park’s records. Although not listed individually in the National Register of Historic Places, Battery 234, including the CRF/BCS Tower, was identified as a contributing structure in the draft National Register Nomination for the proposed Fort Pickens Historic District.1 The tower is considered to be a contributing structure in the historic district that encompasses the Endicott System and later military resources located on western Santa Rosa Island, for which a National Register nomination is currently in progress. The tower is significant for its association with World War II era activities conducted by the U.S. Army to protect the strategically-important Pensacola Harbor. It survives with sufficient integrity to convey its historic associations. Therefore, treatment and use of the CRF/BCS Tower at Battery 234 should be considered within the context of the legal mandates and policy directives established by National Park Service Cultural Resources Management Guideline (Director’s Order 28) for the protection of cultural resources.
