This URL directs the user to the National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) Wetlands Mapper homepage. The NWI was established by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in 1974 to conduct a nationwide inventory of wetlands in the United States to project and report on national wetland's status and trends, and assist in wetlands conservation efforts. To date, this dataset is maintained and updated (biannually) by USFWS. Wetlands in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GRSM) are now included within this national dataset. To access wetland polygons in GRSM, click on the "Wetlands Mapper" link near the bottom of the park, and zoom to the appropriate scale. These data represent the extent, approximate location, and type of wetland communities - as defined by Cowardin et al. (1979) - in GRSM. All NWI data are referenced to NAD83 Albers projection. Wetlands determination and mapping methods conformed to the National Park Service Procedural Manual #77-1, the Federal Geographic Data Committee Wetlands Mapping Standard (FGDC-STD-015-2009), and the Federal Geographic Data Committee Wetlands Classification Standards (FGDC-STD-004-2013). Project metadata, community-type descriptions and statistics, and a user report is accessible via the Wetlands Mapper by clicking on any individual wetland polygon. This dataset represents the most comprehensive on-the-ground field inventory of wetlands in GRSM, and is considered one of the park's most important base layers. As such, GRSM staff will strive to maintain this dataset up-to-date in order to best reflect the current status of wetlands in the park. To that end, any user of this data should ignore any streams classified as "Riverine" wetlands. These habitats are not considered wetlands in our inventory. This was an error encountered on data upload that we are actively working to correct.
