Great Smoky Mountains National Park Water Quality Data in Associated with Study of the Effects of Acidification on Caged Native Brook Trout.
It is imperative for all fishes to maintain systemic pH and the physiological mechanisms that govern this are vary greatly between freshwater acclimated fish. As the headwater streams that southern brook trout inhabit experience regular acidification events, these fish must employ mechanisms that allow for survival during low pH conditions. The PI seeks to a) identify and localize the cellular mechanisms responsible for acid excretion in epithelial tissues of the Southern Brook Trout and b) correlate the physiological effects of stream acidification with studies examining the water chemistry
