Great Smoky Mountains National Park Southeastern Monitoring Network (SEMN)--Cataloochee Creek Site Continuous Water Quality Data.

​The purpose of this study is to collect baseline data to assess potential ecological and hydrological responses of aquatic ecosystems related to climate change. Further, the project will help to isolate possible biometrics and taxa that would be reliable as climate-sensitive indicators. Objectives of the project include the development of a formal interagency partnership monitoring program that is consistent and long-term, and determining whether stream communities are being affected by climate associated variables such as changes in hydrology and temperature. It acts upon Executive Order 13514, which requires federal agencies to participate in a nationally integrated strategy towards sustaining quality of life considering risks related to climate change. Presently, TVA is engaged in planning efforts with several government agencies, primarily through a multiagency monitoring program, the "SE Monitoring Network" (SEMN). Collected data throughout the Southeast are shared with cooperating agencies through SEMN. Two CCSM/SEMN streams are within the park. Five species of fish were detected at the Cataloochee Creek gauging station in June, 2013. The sampling at the Little River gauging station had to be canceled in 2013 because of high water. Fish survey work was conducted in Cataloochee Creek and Little River during July 2014. Fish data is with GRSM Fisheries. The overall EPT community has remained similar with the exception of reduced net-spinning caddisfly species richness. One predatory free-living caddisfly species, Rhyacophila atrata, was collected in 2014 and has not been observed from this creek since 1990. Other data has been provided to GRSM data manager. Components of the study are also covered by permits GRSM-2013-SCI-1136 and GRSM-2012-SCI-0844, held by state agencies.
