2015. Planthopper (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea) and Leafhopper (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) Diversity of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park
An initial study of Planthopper (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea) diversity in early July of 2002 in the Smokies found 8 families, 23 genera and 37 species. By comparison, there are 10 families, 56 genera and 162 species of planthoppers are previously recorded from North Carolina. Predictions of abundance range from 44 to 58 species, but most of the collecting was done with sweep nets (no light trapping or vaccume collecting) and early July may have been too early for some species.
