A baseline nematode survey was conducted across paired sampling sites that represented soil disturbance at different historical time points. In general, disturbed sites contained higher levels of bacterial feeding nematodes and other groups classified as colonizer species. Greater overall diversity and an increased number of plant-feeding taxa characterized most undisturbed sites in the paired sampling design. A total of 3,600 nematodes were classified to a limited extent, representing 8 orders, 45 families, and 260 morphologically distinct species. An analysis of higher taxonomic resolution using DNA sequencing of 721bp of the mitochondrial COI gene was conducted on 34 specimens in the plant-parasitic suborder Criconematina. The DNA analysis placed these specimens into 14 different lineages (species?), and within each lineage the GWMP sequences were almost always represented by a unique sequence. This result suggests that the Criconematina nematodes in GWMP comprise an unusual assemblage of diverse species possible due to a combination of historical geographic and ecological factors. A subset of these nematodes may represent species new to science.
