This mountain lion management report summarizes mountain lion management activities that occurred within Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP or “parks”) during 2013. Management activities covered in this report include mountain lion observations and incidents, meetings, education, mortalities, and 2014 priorities related to mountain lion management within RNSP.In 2013 there were 15 mountain lion observations reported in RNSP, consisting of 16 animals actually observed, one animal heard, and one set of tracks (see Fig. 1 and Appendix A). This is over twice the number of observations in 2012 but still lower than many previous years. Twelve of the observations were of single lions; there was one observation each of two and three mountain lions together, however, these observations were in relative close proximity on the same day, and could have been the same animals. Mountain lions were reported in 6 months of the year: January, April, May, June, August, and September.
