Black Bear management 2014 Annual Report
Schmidt K. 2014. Black Bear management 2014 Annual Report. Redwood National and State Parks. Orick, CA
There were 164 observations, totaling 228 black bears, reported on RNSP wildlife observation cards, bear observation logs, or directly to wildlife staff in 2014; twice the number of bear observations, and greater than twice the number of bears, reported in 2013. However, the number of bears reported reflects, in some cases, repeated observations of the same bear, or bears (i.e., when a bear was persistently in an area with high visibility by humans). In an attempt to gain the best estimate of the number of bears observed in the parks in 2014, the reports were evaluated relative to the timing and location of observations along with any descriptive information provided (e.g., estimated weight or size and color).
