Hylocomium splendens (Hedw.) B.S.G. var. tenue Sharp, known from numerous localities in the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina, is transferred to the genus Pterigynandrum, recognized as a species, and provided with a new name, P. sharpii, and a detailed description.
