The Paramount Ranch is located in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The 650-acre site comprises the most representative, surviving portion of the approximately 2,400 acre former Paramount Studio Movie Ranch. Between 1927 and 1943, Paramount Studios owned and developed the property as the location for many movies. To support filming in this once remote location, Paramount Studios constructed a ranch headquarters area, set locations, and road system, which can be seen today. A landscape architecture studio class from the University of Oregon documented the existing conditions of the site through photos, maps, and field notes. The class then developed designs to offer solutions to the problem of preserving a dynamic cultural landscape, interpreting that landscape to visitors, and providing compatible design solutions to allow for new and current uses of the site while retaining the historical integrity of the cultural landscape. This studio included graduate and undergraduate students in landscape architecture and historic preservation that worked with NPS staff for a week in the field, and collaborated throughout the quarter to produce a booklet highlighting the current conditions of the site and individual designs and preservation treatments for Paramount Ranch.
