Cultural Resources Overview and Assessment for Iyat/Serpentine Hot Springs

As use and potential development issues of Iyat/Serpentine Hot Springs have increased in recent years so have the concerns for the site and the need for a more comprehensive management and development plan. A critical component of this management and development plan is a comprehensive Cultural History Overview and Assessment (O&A.) The goal of this study was to conduct thorough archival and community oral history research regarding the history, and most notably the culture history, of Iyat/Serpentine Hot Springs. In doing so the study aimed to fully document the import, meaning and management needs of the site by looking at all available information gathered from many broad and previously disparate sources. The study paid particular attention to journals, photographs and primary source materials that provide a greater understanding of physical and usage changes at the site over time. The study aimed to not only comprehensively unite data gathered both by previous research endeavors and archival data gathered during the course of this study, but also to establish a broader range of recent and current use and ethnographic data from users of Iyat/Serpentine Hot Springs throughout the associated region by means of community interviews. The aim of this final document was to provide a single comprehensive resource to be used in all decision-making concerning IYAT/Serpentine Hot Springs including, but not limited to, potential impacts on cultural resources, general management, allowable uses and maintenance and construction.
