One of a series of reports dealing with aspects of the NANA region of northwest Alaska, in the area east of Kotzebue Sound drained by the Noatak and Kobuk Rivers, and settled by the Inupiaq peoples. The reports include data on geology, climate, vegetation, wildlife, economic development, politics, ecology, native land claims and sources of information. Author Preface excerpt: This is the third and last of a series of volumes on the early-contact Inupiaq Eskimo societies of northwestern Alaska. The first, titled "The Inupiaq Eskimo Nations of Northwest Alaska," was a social geography in which I identified the nations that used to exist in the NANA region, described their environmental settings, and reconstructed the numbers, distribution, and seasonal movements of their members. In the second, titled "International Affairs," I described the types of relations obtaining between and among the several nations formerly existing in the region. The purpose of the present volume is to describe how traditional Inupiaq nations were organized internally. In addition to presenting a different perspective on Inupiaq nations than the first two volumes did, this work also focuses on a lightly larger geographic area. It includes not only the NANA Region, but also the Point Hope district immediately to the northwest, and the Shishmaref and Wales districts immediately to the southwest..."
