Polymorphism of Philaenus spumarius (L.) (Homoptera, Cercopidae) in different latitudes, altitudes and habitats in the U.S.A.

ABSTRACT: The colour morph frequencies of Philaenus spumarius were analysed in relation to latitude, altitude and habitat, on material collected in the Eastern United States. The effect of latitude is evident as weak clinal variation in the frequencies of colour morphs QAL (QUA + ALB + LOP), VIT and perhaps UST. This variation may mostly be due to climatic factors. It appears that neither altitude nor habitat alone can explain the distribution of the various colour morphs. When altitude and habitat are considered simultaneously, they explain a much higher proportion of the variation in colour morph distribution, which suggests that they are important environmental factors in the maintenance of the colour polymorphism of P. spumarius.
