This paper is the result of fieldwork conducted in the summer of 1991 in the communities of Huslia, Allakaket, and Alatna on the upper Koyukuk River in northwest Alaska. The research was made possible by funding from the U.S. National Park Service, Gates of the Arctic and Northwest Alaska Areas, granted in order to expand the scope of the "Northwest Area Ethnographic Project.
