This report is primarily the result of ethnographic and oral historic fieldwork conducted during summer 1991 in the communities of Huslia, Allakaket, and Alatna on the upper Koyukuk River. This research was stimulated by data gathered in 1989 and 1990 in the context of the more extensive, multi-year "Northwest Areas Ethnographic Project" funded by the Alaska Region, U.S. National Park Service - research focused on the Inupiat inhabitants of the Kobuk and Noatak river drainages. This supplemental research was facilitated by funding from Gates of the Arctic National Park and Kobuk Valley National Park, U.S. National Park Service.
