This report is comprised of a comprehensive archaeological and ethnographic overview and assessment for the Dunes Study Unit of Kobuk Valley National Park. The Dunes Study Unit encompasses roughly 477,000 acres and comprises approximately the southern third of the park. This area contains the Hunt River, Little Kobuk, and Great Kobuk Sand Dunes which are all features that draw visitors off of the main river corridor. Several archaeological and ethnographic research and survey projects have taken place in the Dunes Study Unit within the last 70 years. This report defines the boundaries of the study unit, describes the environmental setting, discusses the ethnographic and archaeological records for the area, and finally provides a summary and recommendations concerning these cultural resources.
