The first of two surveys designed to establish an index count unit for Dall sheep inhabiting the Agi and Eli headwaters of the Noatak National Preserve was completed on July 19, 1985 through the cooperative efforts of ADF&G and the National Park Service. The project objectives are to 1) Utilize radio telemetry data to establish a biologically meaningful count area and 2) Determine the optimum season and methodology for annual surveys of this population. Background information on the project is provided in the proposal (Appendix 1). The following report contains the results and management implications of the survey and recommendations on methodology. The data within will be compared to the results of a winter survey scheduled for March 1986.
