WEAR Cultural Resources FY08 Field Report

This report summarizes findings of 2008 summer season cultural resources staff activities within all four of the Western Arctic National Parklands units. The multi-year 200 Generations archeology project is not reported here but is summarized in a separate document prepared by the University of Washington. June 24- 29, 2008 – Cultural Resources staff collaborated with park Wildland Fire Management to evaluate structural sites scheduled for cyclic brush thinning. Each of the cabin sites under consideration was visited and documented through photographs and notes. Staff involved were Eileen Devinney (WEAR Anthropologist), Charlie Reynar (DENA/WEAR Fire Management), and Shane Herron (Helicopter Pilot). July 8, 2008 – Eileen Devinney accompanied Kristine Ivarson of North Wind, Inc., to the WWII era weather station at Lava Lake. The primary purpose was to conduct soil and sediment sampling to test for contaminants. June 26- July 11, 2008 – Bob Gal assisted the University of Washington archeology research crew with the 200 Generations beach ridge archeology project based out of Anigaaq. He also accompanied Dr. James Jordan (Antioch University) on forays to obtain samples as part of a geomorphology study associated with the beach ridge archeology survey and mapping project. July 11-16, 2008 – Eileen Devinney assisted the University of Washington archeology research crew with 200 Generations beach ridge archeology project based out of Anigaaq. July 7-9, 2008 – Seasonal ranger Doug Demarest was provided background data to revisit known sites at Imuruk Lake, to take photographs and note current conditions and impacts
