This report describes the Air Quality Related Values (AQRVs) of the North Coast and Cascades Network (NCCN). The NCCN parks that are included in the NPS Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) Program and discussed in this report are Mount Rainier (MORA), North Cascades (NOCA), and Olympic (OLYM) national parks; Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve (EBLA); Fort Vancouver National Historic Site (FOVA); Lewis and Clark National Historical Park (LEWI); and San Juan Island National Historical Park (SAJH). MORA, NOCA and OLYM are designated as Class I parks, giving them a heightened level of protection against harm caused by poor air quality under the Clean Air Act (CAA); the rest of the parks are Class II areas. Sullivan et al. (2011a, 2011b) and Kohut (2007) conducted risk assessments for acidification, eutrophication and ozone (O3) for all of the NCCN parks; their results are described in this report. However, because most of the air quality and AQRV data have been collected in the three Class I areas, those parks will be the major focus of this report. AQRVs are those resources sensitive to air quality and include streams, lakes, soils, vegetation, fish and wildlife, and visibility. This report also describes nearby air pollutant emissions and air quality within the NCCN, and their effects on AQRVs. The primary pollutants likely to affect AQRVs include nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) compounds (nitrate [NO3-], ammonium [NH4+], and sulfate [SO42-]); ground-level O3; haze-causing particles; and airborne toxics.
