This section describes the Air Quality Related Values (AQRVs) of the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network (NCBN). AQRVs are those resources sensitive to air quality and include streams, lakes, soils, vegetation, fish and wildlife, and visibility. This report also describes air pollutant emissions and air quality in NCBN, and their effects on AQRVs. The primary pollutants likely to affect AQRVs include nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) compounds (nitrate [NO3-], ammonium [NH4+], and sulfate [SO42-]), ground-level ozone (O3) , haze-causing particles, and airborne toxics. Background for this section can be found in “Air Quality Related Values (AQRVs) in National Parks: Effects from Ozone; Visibility Reducing Particles; and Atmospheric Deposition of Acids, Nutrients and Toxics” (Sullivan 2016). This report covers the eight parks in NCBN considered to be part of the NPS Inventory and Monitoring Program: Assateague Island National Seashore (ASIS), Cape Cod National Seashore (CACO), Colonial National Historical Park (COLO), Fire Island National Seashore (FIIS), Gateway National Recreation Area (GATE), George Washington Birthplace National Monument (GEWA), Sagamore Hill National Historic Site (SAHI), and Thomas Stone National Historic Site (THST). Most parks in NCBN are located in or adjacent to the heavily developed coastal corridor between southern Virginia and Boston. There is a very high density of large human population centers within this network. Emissions of S and N are high upwind from portions of the network, but low elsewhere. Although both S and N deposition within NCBN are quite high, values of S, and to a lesser extent N, deposition have decreased in recent years.
