From the introduction: "Zostera marina, also known as eelgrass, is an important subtidal habitat around Mt. Desert Island, ME and elsewhere around the world. It serves as a nursery area, stabilizes sediments, absorbs pollutants, mitigates wave energy, and prevents shoreline erosion. It is also important in the process of carbon sequestration, which occurs when carbon is stored in the plant and eventually the sediment. Eelgrass stores coastal “blue” carbon similar to marshes and mangroves; but eelgrass and other seagrasses are the least studied despite the fact that they make a significant contribution to carbon sequestration and long-term storage. Eelgrass has significantly declined over the past 20 years. The objective of this study was to determine the amount of carbon that has been sequestered into above ground biomass (shoots), below ground biomass (roots), and the first 30 cm of sediment to determine the carbon stock of areas in Frenchman Bay."
